Rational Arguments

As I continue to form a draft of my rational argument essay, it's refreshing to write about something that I have interest in, which is why people swear. I was never really into psychology, but this topic grabbed my interest when I wrote about it in my micro theme. So, I thought I would keep writing and build on it.

Just doing a little bit of research, studies have shown, which I have attached below, state that swearing conveys emotions in one of the most effective ways. Whether someone is angry, overjoyed, or surprised, swearing makes it incredibly clear. Profanity is, to put it simply, powerful. We're taught at a young age that swearing is "bad", and because of this negative view pushed on us, we have an aroused or alert response to when we hear profanity; it's why this language is so effective when it comes to communication. Swearing can also enhance humor, as rarely are things funny without an f-bomb dropped at the right moment.

We do have to realize that people could use profanity with the intention of insulting others. Since these words are powerful, they have a stinging effect on the recipient being targeted. I'm not completely condoning swearing all together, but we have a first amendment for a reason. Just don't weaponize profanity, it's not in anyone's best interest.

  1. The information you shared about swearing is quite interesting. I also decided to my rational argument on swearing but focusing on the benefits of swearing. It's will definitely be interesting to see what your future rational argument will be.

Doc Project

Whether I watch a movie, TV show, or documentary, I never really paid close attention to the cinematic elements that make up a film. After sitting down and digesting my documentary of choice for this project,  Cartel Land,  I found that devices such as sound or music greatly contribute to making a film enjoyable to watch that keeps you thinking afterwards.           I went back and rewatched a couple scenes from Cartel Land for analytical purposes with a strong focus on the filmmaker's choices of music. There were two scenes in particular in which music played an instrumental role in forming how the audience should view certain people. One scene used upbeat, triumphant music while Dr. Morales, the leader of the Autodefensas (armed citizenry) gave a speech in a town square in front of the local people. Without music during this scene, the audience would likely have had to come up with their own interpretation of Morales' character. Similarly, when ...

Don't Hate on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving truly is one of the greatest holidays, and I honestly don't care what anyone else says. But since I'm writing this, obviously I do. Far too many people dump on Thanksgiving for whatever reasons they have ("the food is gross") but many times when pressed on why they dislike it, they struggle to come up with an answer. Keep in mind these are largely the same people who consider you immoral if you utter anything negative about Halloween, which is overrated by the way. Thanksgiving is unique and happens once a year, so let's all just enjoy it. I will concede and admit I understand the perspective that the food isn't the greatest (I still disagree) since I'm a picky eater, but we really only have an excuse to stuff our faces with turkey, potatoes, mac n cheese, ham, and desserts once a year. Can you think of another holiday when it's acceptable to consume that much food? No! And if you don't like the food and it's an issue, by all mean...

Introduction

Here we go, the required "tell me about yourself" post. In case you're wondering, it took me several days to write three complete paragraphs about myself, which should be easy considering this is the subject I should know the most about. This isn't because I live a boring life, in fact just the opposite. It's just something that feels a little weird to do behind a screen. Who knows maybe it's just me. But anyway, let's get on to the basics. I'm from Bartlett, IL, which is about 45 minutes north of NCC, 25 minutes if I'm the one driving. I compete on the golf team here at North Central and I am a business administration major.      I played baseball and basketball for as long as I could remember, but after stepping out of my comfort zone I discovered golf and soon fell in love with it. Ever since I was 10, not a day went by where I wasn't swinging a golf club. I'm so addicted to this game that I would practice outside in the snow. Eve...
